Three, $500 awards were provided by the Athena Oakville Scholarship Fund – a fund held within the Oakville Community Foundation – to Michelle Hamlaoui, (Maria) Beatriz Makwana and Mary Kidnew. A $500 scholarship from the Residential Construction Council of Ontario was awarded to Amy Proulx and another $500 scholarship was given to Reva Spencer from the Toronto Commercial Real Estate Women’s Association. The women were selected for actively preparing for careers in the skilled trades, demonstrating leadership attributes and serving as advocates and mentors to others considering careers in skilled trades.
“The Centre is about providing people with opportunities to build better futures,” said Kathy Mills, CAO, for The Centre for Skills Development & Training. “The WIST program with its comprehensive hands-on training and wrap-around supports, provides the foundation for students to choose their own pathway and meet their own career goals.”
In partnership with the Ontario Women’s Directorate, Canadian Women’s Foundation, RESCON (Residential Construction Council of Ontario) and Mohawk College, The Centre for Skills Development & Training offers WIST. The 29-week hands-on skilled trades training program offers women the opportunity to learn the practical skills and theoretical knowledge necessary for excelling in rewarding careers within the construction industry.
