Burlington, ON: The 2009 Federal Budget means more opportunities for people who need training to re-join the workforce, according to Kathy Mills, Chief Administrative Officer for The Centre for Skills Development & Training. The Federal government's investment into skills and training, announced on Tuesday, will help more people access training and employment services, such as those offered at The Centre.
“We're already in the business of connecting individuals with the programs that best suit their needs and the needs of Ontario's workforce,” said Mills. “Additional investment by the Federal government means that organizations like The Centre can extend their reach to individuals who need help the most, including laid-off workers and newcomers.”
“I'm looking forward to working with our partners at the Federal and Provincial levels to make sure this investment can be used to positively impact the lives of more people in our community,” Mills continued.
Mills also applauded the Federal government's plan to extend Employment Insurance benefits to 50 weeks from 45 weeks for two years. This extension will allow unemployed people more time to work with local service providers to help them find a job.
“So many people need the support of government-funded programs like Second Career and Skills Development to re-focus their career paths, but the process can be long and confusing. For example, several of The Centre's skilled trades programs meet funding requirements—yet
the process itself can be a barrier for our clients. Having more time to fully explore their options will make a real difference.”
The Centre offers programs and services that help individuals prepare for long-term careers, and many programs meet the requirements for Federal or Provincial funding. People who want to learn more about their funding options are encouraged to attend a free information session. The Centre regularly offers information sessions for those interested in skilled trades programs, including Residential Construction, Home Renovation, Electrician and Millwright. To find out when and where upcoming sessions are being offered, or to register, visit www.thecentre.on.ca, or call 905-333-3499.
