Ask the Expert – How can I get my foreign skilled trades experience recognized?

PrintFriendly

The first thing you need to do is contact your local apprenticeship office to meet with a training consultant. They will ask you to bring documents that show your training and experience in the trade. The documents should include things like letters from your past employers, and any certificates and diplomas you have received. Your information will need to be translated before this meeting by an official translator who has seen the original documents. If you meet the requirements to practice in Ontario you will get a temporary license that will allow you to work in the trade until you pass the Ontario licensing examination (90 days). If you don’t meet the requirements the consultant will help you enter a training program.
